It’s time to grow up, take control, and become debt free!
When you finally make the decision to become debt free, you are forced to take a long hard look at yourself. You’ll have to admit some things that you have tried not to think about - most notably, poor spending habits and your 'gotta-have-it-now' attitude.
"Some debts are fun when you are acquiring them, but none are fun when you set about retiring them."
- Ogden Nash, American Writer |
If reading this is feeling a bit too uncomfortable, don’t feel too bad. As a rule, most Americans are in the same boat, whether they are ready to admit it or not. But you can change those destructive spending patterns and you CAN live a life completely free of debt.
In order to become debt free, you have to grow up, financially speaking that is. Yes, this is harsh language, (the truth will set you free) but taking full ownership of your financial situation is precisely has to happen in order to make positive change happen.
As adults, we must have realistic and balanced attitudes about money, and life in general, if we are to become debt free. We should understand that we can’t always get what we want, when we want it - and that patience and self-discipline are often required as part of the debt free solution.
So what do we do? We see something we want, and we go out and buy it on credit - which is exactly what a pre-teen would do if (God forbid) kids under 12 had credit cards.
College students are some of the worst offenders and credit card companies love this particular age group for the huge balances they rack up, that in many cases their parents quickly inherit. (We certainly don't want poor Johnny to be dealing with debt collectors and interupting his studies!)
For many young adults, this is their first taste of freedom, and they are let loose not yet knowing what they don't know. We should not be surprised when they find themselves in financial crisis within the first years of college. During this time, they can create some terrible spending habits. Once they are out of college, it all catches up with them.
The creditors start calling them night and day; the financial stress negatively impacts virtually every aspect of their lives. It’s a sad reality for too many young adults and the problem keeps getting worse.
But there is hope. You can turn it around - although it won’t happen overnight. It’s not easy to become debt free. We’re talking about ingrained attitudes and practices that have been with you your entire adult life. In order to change, it will take some concentrated and prolonged mental effort.
Becoming debt free can be your reality! You CAN do it. You CAN become debt free - and the rewards of doing so are countless.
