Your credit rights are protected by law. Knowing and understanding these rights can be beneficial to you in many ways, should you ever find yourself in a difficult financial situation.
Specifically, if the situation requires you to check the accuracy of your credit report; to obtain additional credit, or if you are being asked for money because of a credit debt you owe.
Our credit rights tool is available as a free download that has all the credit acts listed, with details on how these laws protect you.
First, you will see the Fair Credit Reporting Act. You may already be aware that your credit information is confidential, and should only be used in a controlled manner so as to keep identity theft at a minimum.
You can find out what to do in the case of a credit error; who can receive credit reports, and what consumer reporting agencies are allowed do to with your credit information.
Your rights also include the Equal Credit Opportunity Act, which entitles you to credit if you qualify. You cannot be denied on unreasonable grounds. For example, just because you are a woman does not mean you can be denied credit for that reason alone. Or, just because you happen to be a Baptist a company cannot deny you credit for that reason.
Discrimination of credit applicants is unlawful and can lead to serious consequences by the offending party. There are many different factors that are protected under the law. Protected segments include religion, age, gender, and several others.
You should familiarize yourself with items that apply to you, just in case a creditor ever denies you credit or otherwise performs an offensive action in relation to your credit.
There is a lot of extra information to be had, and within this free tool, you can find out how to contact various credit unions, credit bureaus, and get other questions you might have about your credit rights answered.
Either by phone, letter, or email, you can get all the information you need through the correct contact.
