Did you know that the envelope budget system can work electronically, too?
You’ve probably heard of the envelope budgeting system. It’s a simple plan, where you make an envelope for each of your expense categories - gasoline, groceries, etc. - and put the allotted amount of cash into each envelope at the start of the month.
"MONEY: The mint makes it first, it is up to you to make it last.”
- Evan Esar |
Once you’ve spent the money in a particular envelope, that’s it for the month.
The problem with the envelope budget system, of course, is that it was devised decades ago, when nearly all purchases were transacted in cold, hard cash. Nowadays, cash is a rarer form of payment; most people use debit cards, automatic transfers, and checks.
The envelope budget system can still work, though, even if the “envelopes” are figurative rather than literal.
One such product is called Personal Mvelopes, and it’s an online system that tracks all of your expenses electronically. It even automatically monitors your bank and credit card accounts, downloading all your transactions as soon as they happen.
It works the same as a literal envelope budget system. You tell Mvelopes how much you’re allowing yourself to spend on a particular area, and it keeps track of it for you. The only difference is that instead of spending cash, you’re spending the money electronically.
Of course, one of the advantages of the old-fashioned way is that there’s a psychological difference between paying for something electronically and paying for something with actual cash money.
When the payment is electronic, it seems detached and somehow not real. You can easily spend $50 online at Amazon.com without even batting an eye. But if you were in a store and had to plunk down $50 CASH - well, you’d feel that, you’d wince a little more.
So you do have to be careful when you’re conducting all your business electronically. You have to remember that there’s REAL money involved here, even if you can’t see it.
You must always keep in mind that the money you spend affects YOU and your family directly, and you have to spend it accordingly.
The Mvelopes program is a good way to monitor your spending day in and day out. It can get you in the habit of spending wisely, of second-guessing every purchase to determine whether you really need it, and of searching for bargains.
All of this can help you get out of debt and gain financial freedom - and that’s the best thing you could do for you and your family.
"Creditors have better memories than debtors; and creditors are a superstitious sect, great observers of set days and times."
- Benjamin Franklin |
