High earning workers tend to get grouped into the category of those with college degrees, whether it’s a Bachelors Degree, a Masters, or a Doctorate.

It is important to remember that in terms of wages, all things are not equal - and life just isn’t fair sometimes. Inequities go with the territory in terms of employment. Your focus should remain on the value to bring to your employer and what you can earn, not so much on what other high earning workers are making.

For instance, some people remain in the same position for many years. As people grow older, their earnings steadily go up. So when someone fresh out of college at 24 enters the same job as someone who’s been in the role for 10 to 15 years, they shouldn’t be surprised to learn they will be making less money when they start out.

This amount of time can also add up to valuable experience, and experience can easily lead to higher pay.

When that same 45 year-old decides to switch jobs, that person already has a mountain of experience behind them. Sure, they may not have the official degree framed on an office wall, but 10 years worth of valuable job skills won’t be ignored by any reasonable employer.

Likewise, the newly graduated 24 year old with little hands-on experience may not be able to beat out the veteran, even with the impressive degree.

Total earnings are not simply limited to your monthly or bi-weekly paycheck. You must also take into account your benefits, incentives, job security, possible advancement, and retirement plans. High earning workers manage their total compensation package, not just their base salary figure.

If our 45 year-old has been in that job for 10 years, then that person quite possibly knows the ins and outs of the position around him or her. The college graduate will have to learn the position from scratch. Likewise, some companies prefer to promote from within rather than attempt to hire outside and have to deal with all the training expense.

Your situation is probably somewhat different than the example we have used here. You may be younger, but still have more experience than someone spending a great deal of time and money getting his or her college degree. Your experience and knowledge can benefit you in a world that demands those very things.

Seek out ways to improve yourself on an ongoing basis. Continue to grow and expand your skill-set. Work hard and make it clear to your employer that you wish to move up in the organization.

Use all you have to your advantage and look toward your future as one of the many high earning workers.
