What Is A Credit Score?

A credit score establishes your credit worthiness in numeric terms. A credit score is based on your credit history that is detailed in your credit report.

Credit history information includes details regarding repayment of your debts in the past. Compilation of the necessary information regarding your credit history is done by credit bureau agencies like Equifax, Experian and TransUnion.

Why Do I Need A Good Credit Score?

Well, if you don’t use credit, you don’t need to improve credit score results because your score won’t matter.

However, every time you approach a bank, a credit card company or some finance company to ask for credit or a loan, your credit score will be reviewed and considered based on certain factors.

The credit score is a primary tool for lenders to determine if you are eligible for additional credit.

The use of credit scores is not limited to merely banks, but even other government agencies, home equity, cellular phone companies and auto loan lenders.

A good credit score indicates that you are a good credit risk and assures the lender that you will repay the money that you have borrowed, on time. While a high score definitely increases your chances of being approved, a low score on the other hand, will only reduce your chances of qualitying. Hence, arises the need to improve credit score results for most Americans.

Which Factors Determine My Credit Score?

Credit scores have a direct impact on credit decisions. Since, credit scores are so crucial for money lenders, it becomes all the more necessary to have a brief idea of the factors that influence them. Some of the factors that improve credit score results are listed below:

  1. Negative factors like bankruptcy, delinquency and late payments will reduce your credit score significantly.
  2. Current outstanding debts points out the possibility that you may not be able to repay on time.
  3. A limited or incomplete credit history makes it difficult to calculate your credit score.
  4. Frequent credit inquiries indicate the probability that you wish to borrow more money and hence more debt.
  5. Different credit accounts that you are presently using.

However, certain criteria like age, gender, national origin, religion, receipt of public assistance are not taken into account.

How Can I Improve Credit Score Results?

  1. Prompt payment of bills.
  2. Keep your credit card balances to a minimum which will reduce the amount of debt that you owe. This will also consequently result in improved debt-credit ratio.
  3. Restrict opening of credit accounts when not required.
  4. Check your credit reports for accuracy and correct any errors that may be present therein.
  5. Apply for new credits only when necessary and only after your past scores have improved.
  6. Avoid closing of credit accounts with a zero balance as this will only work against you. Doing so can have a negative affect on the debt-credit ratio.
  7. Ensure that information pertaining to your credit is checked only when required.
