Personal Debt Counseling - Education Makes All The Difference

Personal debt counseling should be talk to everyone from a very early age. Unfortunately, our schools are not educating us well on money matters.

The fact is that despite our world revolving around money, we don’t do much in the way of educating people about how to use it. You learn the basics in grade school, and maybe how to calculate simple interest in high school -- and that’s just about it.

"There is only one success -
to be able to spend your life in your own way.”
- Christopher Morley

The real-world ins and outs of handling money wisely, investing, maximizing your profits, etc., aren’t taught to a satisfactory degree unless you go to business school, or study personal finance on your own.

There is no shame in admitting you could use some personal debt counseling. Most people, in fact, could benefit a great deal from some additional education in personal finance.

As a consequence of this under-education, many Americans find themselves deeply in debt. Personal debt counseling can help you get out of debt, but more importantly, it can teach you the principles you need to know to STAY out of debt.

Now, not all personal debt counseling groups are created equal. Many are only interested in making money off of you by enrolling you in “debt management programs” and charging you exorbitant fees for it.

A good credit counseling organization, meanwhile, will help you deal with your creditors (for a much more modest fee), but will also offer workshops and training sessions to teach you about handling your finances.

Two websites, www.debtadvice.org and www.cccs.org, can help you find legitimate consumer debt counseling in your area. Some of these agencies offer programs for the whole family: young children can learn basic money concepts, teenagers can learn about things like buying a car, renting an apartment, and budgeting for household expenses. Adults are instructed on budgeting their money, investing for retirement and handling their debt problems.

Take a second to just think about this issue: Who taught you the ins and outs of renting an apartment? Who taught you how to get the best deal when you buy a car? The answer is probably either “no one” or “I just did what my parents did.”

Everything we do involves money, yet no one really teaches us how to handle it! So it’s no surprise that so many millions of Americans are deeply in debt.

Personal debt counseling can help you get out of debt if you’re so far in that you require outside assistance. But the underlying problems - your spending habits, your lifestyle, and your general attitudes toward money - must be addressed separately.

That’s where these workshops and tutorials can come in handy. If you feel like you could stand to learn a little more about how to make your money work for you, consider taking advantage of the resources offered by a reliable credit counseling agency. It could make all the difference.

"No man's credit is as good as his money."
- Edgar Watson Howe

Reasons why you should make the decision today to get out of debt:

Debt is NOT your friend. It's not a wonderful "tool" for building wealth. That's a myth.

The Debtor is a slave to the lender. Real "freedom" is when YOU are in control of your money, and when your money is working for you.

If all your income goes to making payments, you have no personal freedom to follow your dreams.

When you eliminate your payments and use that money to save, you quickly begin building wealth.

YOU CAN GET OUT OF DEBT... and start winning again.
